Rohit Sharma’s Test career is facing serious questions after a string of poor performances, leaving fans and cricket pundits wondering if the Indian captain still has what it takes in the longest format of the game after his poor showing on Australian soil.

After Rohit’s dreadful run in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, former Australian opener Simon Katich delivered a harsh reality check, warning that England, with its challenging conditions, would not be the best place for the Indian skipper to regain his lost touch.

Katich pointed out that Rohit Sharma’s recent numbers are alarmingly low, as he ended the 2024-25 season with just 164 runs in eight Tests, at an average of just 10.93. His dismal run continued on the Australian tour, where he managed just 31 runs in three matches before opting to rest for the fifth and final Test in Sydney, where India lost the match by six wickets.

Simon Katich was quoted as saying in India Today: “Only he knows if he is hungry and driving at 37 to start again. England will not be easy series. England is on the way up. They have good young fast players. Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse they are fine.”

Furthermore, Katich raised doubts about Rohit Sharma’s future in Test cricket, especially with the challenging tour of England. The cricket expert pointed out that at the age of 37, it is difficult to start batting in Test matches and emphasized that only Rohit can decide if he still has the will to do so.

The Australian added: “I daresay it will be a tough tour if he decides to go on it and the Indian selectors pick him first. Those numbers don’t make for pretty reading. Test cricket is no place for 37-year-olds at the top of the order. History suggests that and only Rohit Sharma knows if he is hungry to continue.”

Recently, Rohit Sharma made it clear that he has no plans to retire from Tests anytime soon. The 37-year-old hit back at his critics by expressing his belief that his Test form will improve over the next five months. He said: “Have a person sit with a microphone, laptop or pen and write things down; our lives are not changed because of what that person writes or says.”

Reacting to Rohit’s statement, Simon Katich jokingly said that the Indian rookie will have a bright future as a stand-up comedian after he retires from the game as his humor is very good.

Katich signed off by saying, “Well, if you look at the numbers, they’re damning. We saw that in this test. It was very selfless of him to give up the test. I saw in that interview, very well said. There is no doubt that he has a future after he finishes playing cricket in stand-up comedy because his humor was very good.”
