Rohit Sharma slams Sam Konstas after clash with Bumrah in Sydney Test
Captain of India Rohit Sharma he strongly supported Jasprit Bumrah following the pacer’s fiery altercation with Australian opener Sam Konstas during the ongoing fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Known for his calm demeanor, Bumrah surprised everyone by losing his cool after exchanging with the 19-year-old Australian batsman on the first day.
During the lunch break on Day 2, Rohit, speaking to the host broadcasters, termed Konstas’ behavior as “senseless” and backed his players to stand their ground.
“Our boys are classy, but they won’t be silent forever”
Rohit made it clear that as Indian team focused on playing cricket with class, he will not tolerate unnecessary provocations.
“Humare ladke jab tak shaant hain tab tak shaant hain. Agar aap ungli kar rahe ho, tab thodi na koi shaant baithega,” said Rohit. “Khelo for cricket, yeh faaltu ki cheezein shobha nahi deti. (Our boys keep calm until poked. Play cricket, these unnecessary antics don’t look pretty.)”
He further added, “Humare ladke classy hain. Hum zyada iss baat pe focus karte hain ki humara kaam kya hai. (Our guys are classy. We focus more on our tasks.)”
Fierce debate between Bumrah and Konstas
The incident occurred on the penultimate ball of Day 1 when the Usman Khawaja you took time to settle at the crease, disrupting Bumrah’s rhythm.
However, it was not Khawaja’s delay that caused the tension. Konstas, who was standing at the non-striker’s end, made comments that angered Bumrah. The pacer, known for his calm personality, could not hold back and engaged in a verbal altercation.
On the very next ball, Bumrah dismissed Khawaja, forcing the edge to KL Rahul at second slip.
The celebration that followed was fierce. Bumrah rushed towards Konstas, letting his emotions show. Virat Kohliwhich was located in the cordon of the ramp, also ran towards Konstas, which added to the drama.
“Bumrah had every right to react”
Rohit Sharma justified Bumrah’s reaction, saying that the team’s priority was professionalism, but he would not remain silent if provoked.
“It was important to take a few wickets at that point to put Australia under pressure,” explained Rohit. “Our focus is on winning games, but if someone crosses the line, our players will respond.”
Kohli’s fiery engagement
Known for his passionate approach to the game, Virat Kohli didn’t hold back either. After Bumrah dismissed Khawaja, Kohli ran towards Konstas in a flustered manner, showing that he was not happy with the young batsman’s behaviour.

Dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for just 2 runs on the second day, Bumrah claimed his 32nd wicket of the series, surpassing Bishan Singh Bedi’s record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in an away Test series.
Bumrah’s leadership was crucial for India, especially in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. His fiery spell on the first day set the tone for India’s fightback in the crucial Sydney Test.
