Captain of India Rohit Sharma has finally addressed the speculation surrounding his absence from the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. After opting to “rest” for the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, there were rumors of Rohit’s potential Test retirement. However, in a candid interview with Star Sports, Rohit set the record straight, claiming that he will not be retiring from the game anytime soon.
“I was standing. That’s what I would say,” began Rohit, reflecting on his decision to pull out of the Sydney Test. “I wasn’t scoring runs and the team needed fit players. It was a tough call, but the right one for the team.”
“This is not a retirement decision”
Rohit’s poor form in Australia – he scored just 31 runs in five innings – prompted him to withdraw for the crucial Test. His absence led to reports that his Test career could be over, with some suggesting that the selectors had already informed him of the end of his red-ball journey.
But Rohit rubbished the claims, making it clear that his decision to quit was purely based on form and not retirement.
“This decision is not a retirement decision. I am not going anywhere,” Rohit said firmly. “I believe in myself. There’s no guarantee I won’t be scoring runs after five months. Cricket is changing every day and I believe things will turn around.”
“I have to be realistic”
At 38, Rohit admitted the need to be realistic about his form and future. He admitted that he has matured with age and understands his role in the team.
“I’ve been playing this game for so long. No one outside can decide when I should go, or sit, or lead the team,” he said. “I’m a reasonable man, a mature man, a father of two children. I know what I want in life.”
Rohit also had a message for those speculating about his future. “Someone sitting with a microphone or a laptop cannot dictate my career. I have played cricket for many years and I make my own decisions,” he added with a smile.
“Main Kahin Ja Nahi Raha”
During the interview, when the host thanked Rohit for his service as India’s Test captain, Rohit wittily replied, “Arre kahin ja nahi raha hu main” (I’m not going anywhere).
His statement reiterated his commitment to Indian cricket. Despite his absence from the Sydney Test, Rohit has confirmed that he will continue to play for India, especially in the ODI format, where he remains the captain for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy.
Rohit’s decision to retire opened the door for Shubman Gill to return to the playing XI. Gill, who was dropped for the Boxing Day Test, replaced Rohit at the top of the order. Meanwhile, Prasidh Krishna came in for the injured Akash Deep.
India needed a win in the Sydney Test to level the series after trailing 1-2. Led by stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, the visitors made an impressive start, reducing Australia to 39/4 inside 12 overs on day two.
What’s next for Rohit Sharma?
Although Rohit’s Test future is uncertain, he remains optimistic about a comeback. He dismissed talk of retirement, focusing instead on the present and his aim to contribute to India’s success.
“I didn’t come this far to just sit around,” he said. “I want to win games for my team. But sometimes you have to think about the needs of the team instead of your own form. It’s all about teamwork.”
With the 2025 Champions Trophy around the corner, Rohit’s leadership in the ODI format will be crucial. His performance in the tournament could determine his future in international cricket.
