New wildfire threatens homes in California
Residents are being evacuated in the San Diego area as firefighters battle thunderstorms that threaten homes.
CalFire San Diego confirmed it is assisting the city of Poway, which is 34 miles from San Diego, with vegetation fire near Pomerado Road and Ted Williams Parkway that broke out around 1 p.m. Monday.

Officials said the fire is currently two acres in size and is threatening structures.
The City of Poway also confirmed that firefighters responded to the fire and issued evacuation orders.
“The Poway Fire Department is responding to a fire near Ted Williams and Pomerado Road. Traffic on Ted Williams and Pomerado is affected – expect road closures. Residents of Glen Oak Way and Wilsey Way are being evacuated,” the city wrote in a post on X .

Authorities say the fire is in the brush driven by strong winds and has potential for growth.
Cal Fire crews are assisting at the scene, and a helicopter has been called in to provide aerial support.
The Sheriff’s Office said a temporary evacuation point is being set up at Abraxas High School, located at 12450 Glen Oak Road in Poway.

This is the second fire to hit Southern California on Monday as a small fire broke out in Los Angeles near the iconic Griffith Observatory.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that the fire was “completely extinguished in 31 minutes” and that the fire never grew beyond a quarter acre.
“All threatened objects were successfully defended and undamaged,” the warning reads.

Los Angeles Police Department later confirmed that the witness spotted a young man who lit a fire in that area and left.
Officials arrested the suspectwhom they said was probably a passer-by, and detained him. His identity has not been released.
