NBC News is cutting 40 jobs, prompting a rebuke from the union


NBC News conducted a round of layoffs Thursday, prompting a swift backlash from union employees who say the action is illegal.

The NBC Digital NewsGuild and The NewsGuild of New York strongly condemned management’s announcement Thursday, calling the move a blatant disregard for workers’ rights, in a press release shared with Fox News Digital. Business Insider reported that NBC has laid off about 40 employees, while creating about 12 new positions for which laid-off workers could apply as the department shifts to areas of growth.

The union said firing workers represented by the Guild in the middle of negotiations for the first contract was illegal.

“NBC News management has shown a complete disregard for labor laws and the demands of its union employees,” Carlin McCarthy, first vice president of the NBC Guild and producer of NBC News NOW’s Top Story segment with Tom Llamas, told Fox News Digital. “We refuse to hide from their callous and morally bankrupt behavior. We will fight for a fair contract and win it.”

The NBC Digital NewsGuild represents nearly 300 reporters, editors, designers, video journalists, animators, social media strategists and editorial staff, negotiating its first contract since the group unionized in 2019. Any changes to members’ working conditions during negotiations, including layoffs, must to negotiate back and forth under federal labor law, the union claims.

“NBC News executives live in a fantasy where federal law doesn’t apply to them and the newsroom just rolls over without a fight,” said Tate James, documentary video editor and unit manager. – It’s time to wake up.

The NewsGuild of New York filed unfair labor practice charges against NBC in connection with previous rounds of layoffs that took place in 2023 and 2024, according to a press release. Charges are still pending before the National Labor Relations Board.

“We are evaluating all options and expect NBC management to negotiate these proposed layoffs in good faith because they are required by law,” said Susan DeCarava, president of The NewsGuild of New York.

The NewsGuild of New York, Local 31,003 of the Communications Workers of America, is a labor union representing nearly 6,000 media professionals and other employees at news organizations in the New York area, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, Thomson Reuters and ProPublica.

CNN also announced plans to lay off 6% of its workforce this week. The a long-awaited move as a result, it cut 200 jobs.
