Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote a letter to Google asking the company to question her decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order that required a water body – which borders it with the US, Cuba and Mexico – renamed the Bay of America in its first week on duty.
But it will only appear on Google Maps with a new name for people based in the US – elsewhere in the world will retain its current name, which is used for hundreds of years.
There is no international organization responsible for naming water bodies.
But Mexico claims that the US cannot legally change the name of the bay because the United Nations Convention at sea law dictates that the sovereign territory of each country extends only to 12 nautical miles from the coast.

Google has not yet responded to the request of the BBC for comment.
But in a statement of social media on Monday, it was said: “We have a long -standing practice of applying a name change when they were updated in official government sources.”
Mount Denali will also rename Mount McKinley to the United States, following another trump order.
“When official names differ between countries, ticket users see their official local name,” it said.
Sheinbaum criticized Google’s decision, saying that the company should not respond to the “country’s term” to change the name “International Sea”.
But she seemed to have fun with Trump’s move by joking Mexico, he might ask for Google to make some additional renaming decisions.
“By the way, we will also ask for Mexican America to appear on the map,” she said.
Sheinbaum joked earlier that he would consider the renunciation of North America in the country as “América Mexican”.
“He says he will call him the American Bay on his continental shelf,” Sheinbaum said earlier when Trump signed an executive command.
“For us, this is still a Gulf of Mexican, and for the whole world there is still a Mexican bay.”
