Man Utd squad moves to improve £85m Garnach ‘best LW in England’
More misery at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Reuben Amorim‘with Manchester United defeated by Brighton & Hove Albion erase the feel-good factor that was cultivated at Anfield a week ago.
The cyclical nature of United’s form is deeply concerning, with the capacity for flashy front-footed performances clearly within this Red Devils mix but produced inconsistently.
Bruno Fernandes said the dejected figure as he made his way down the tunnel, the Seagulls elated around him. His discovered fear may just be coming true. Liverpool was a flash. United are back to their old ways.
It’s clear that Amorim has the tactical mind to achieve great things, but some of the players at his disposal simply won’t make it in the long run. Man United need new signings and they have to do it right.
Who does Man United want to sell?
Marcus Rashford looks set to leave his boyhood club this month, perhaps on loan but likely with an eye on a permanent future elsewhere.
Antony is too approaching the winter move Real Betis, freeing up some space on the wide flanks for investment. United’s problems have been alleviated by the growth of Amado Diallo, but the 22-year-old cannot be expected to carry the weight of Old Trafford on his back and needs support.
Maybe this winger will do…
Man United in search of exciting winger signing
According to Sky Germany, Manchester United have a concrete interest in signing Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, who has been tearing up this term in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund previously stated that they would search a whopping €100m (£85m) payday for the 20-year-old’s departure, but it has since been revealed that the 10th-placed side will surrender their negotiating power if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
With Antony and Rashford leaving, this would be a fantastic job for Amorim’s side, providing United with fresh quality to start a new era.
However, Fabrizio Romano confirmed with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool preparing to make moves, it is crucial that INEOS act quickly.
Why Jamie Gittens would be perfect for Man United
Gittens’ performance came at breakneck speed, with the young talent impressing last term under Edin Terzić, especially recorded eight assists in all competitions as he entered the senior phase during the final months of the campaign.
Focus transfer
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big name failures. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across the Football FanCast.
He is young and malleable enough that Amorim can force him to his own design, and while the left-back feels like a natural successor to Rashford, it is Alejandro Garnacho whom he could prove to surpass.
Chelsea and Napoli are interested in Garnach this month, but it seems unlikely that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will give the go-ahead for the Argentinian’s sale, given the mini-exodus already underway.
The 20-year-old practically oozes quality, so dynamic and daring when he’s on his game. However, Man United could enjoy an even better wing talent in Gittens, as the Englishman boasts an exceptional scoring record and could take on the role of talisman at the Theatre.
Garnacho has scored eight goals and added five assists in 32 games this term but only won three times in the Premier League, with Samuel Luckhurst of the MEN noting that the winger “he did not stand out” in recent performances under Amorim after being left out of the first-team squad over the festive period.
According to FBrefGittens ranks in the top 7% of positions in the Bundesliga this term for goals scored without penalties, as well as in the top 1% for progressive passes and successful take-ons per 90, illustrating the type of electric, goal-scoring winger Amorim would put his gloves on.
Garnacho, by comparison, is in the top 51% for goals without penaltiestop 8% for progressive transfers and among the worst 32% for successful Premier League signings, highlighting that English talent is actually more effective.
A carry is considered progressive if the ball is moved towards the opponent’s goal at least 10 yards from its starting point or carried into the penalty area.
Perhaps most exciting is Gittens’ ability to hit the target in multiple competitions, as he has also been in good contention for the Yellow Wall throughout his Champions League campaign, with Dortmund currently ninth, one point off automaticity.

One of the most impressive aspects of Gittens’ skills has to be his clinical sharpness, as he has missed four big chances in Dortmund’s two major competitions this season, while netting 11 times – an excellent strike rate.
In fact, the wide forward has even been hailed as “England’s best left winger in 2024/25” Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchletysuggesting that Three Lions player Thomas Tuchel will be keeping a close eye on the rising star, who could find himself in some exciting talks during 2025.
That’s just added fuel to the transfer fire as far as United are concerned, but there’s no doubt that if Gittens can transfer his German and European form to English shores, he could unlock United’s attacking capacity under Amorim’s wing.
After all, Amorim has entered the disaster zone at Old Trafford and has so far struggled to establish the lasting synergy that has been missing for so long.
Some might say that United have regressed since the Portuguese took the helm, but he simply needs more time to establish his authority in one of world football’s greatest institutions.
Will he be the one to bring Man United back into the limelight? He will need signings, and with Gittens on the market and attracting intrigue from some of the biggest strikers in the country, United must ensure they are the team to welcome him home.
