Liverpool rejected an approach for Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid | Football news
Liverpool rejected an approach for Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid.
There was no formal offer, but an approach was made by the Spanish side.
Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season and reports in Spain say the 26-year-old has informed Liverpool he wants to play for Madrid.
Real can now talk directly to Alexander-Arnold about a pre-contract.
But Liverpool, it seems, have no interest in losing the player as they fight for the Premier League title.
Three of their core players – the constructors of the glory days under Jurgen Klopp – are out of contract this summer, yet they have remained almost flawless in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are discussing new contracts, with all three out of contract in the summer.
Speaking with Sky Sports in December, Alexander-Arnold said: “I’ve been at the club for 20 years, I’ve signed four or five contract extensions and none of them have been made public – and neither will this one.”
Carragher: Alexander-Arnold decision is different from Salah or Van Dijk
Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher believes that Alexander-Arnold’s close ties to Liverpool could complicate Real Madrid’s move for the England international.
“I don’t necessarily think he’s out, but I think it’s a different situation than the other guys.
“He obviously has a big decision to make. I desperately want him to sign [a new deal]. He’s a local player, I love seeing local players, whether it’s Liverpool or Everton, really flourish. He was one of the best local players we ever had from the city.
“I think the way Liverpool are playing at the moment and what they could do in the future looks really exciting. I’m desperate for him to sign. I hope he’s the same.
“I believe that Real Madrid and Barcelona attract players from all over the world. I think it’s a dream for probably 90 percent of players around the world to play or end up at their final destination Real Madrid or Barcelona.
“You see Mbappe and you see it with any player who is maybe rated as the best player in the world. They somehow end up playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona.
“I think having Trent and him playing for his local club makes it a little bit different. If Trent was playing for Chelsea or Arsenal, he wasn’t a London boy. I don’t think it would be a question of him making the move.
“I think the fact that he’s going to leave his club, he’s been there since he was five or six years old. I think it’s a bigger decision than just being Real Madrid. Like I said, nine times out of 10, when Real Madrid wants to sign a contract with a player and that player wants to leave, that usually happens.”
