LIAM COEN: Jacksonville Jaguars hire Tampa Bay offensive coordinator as eighth head coach | NFL News

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Cohen as the eighth head coach under owner Shad Khan from Trent Baalke.

Khan surprisingly fired Baalke on Wednesday to clear the way for Coen to land in Jacksonville who initially declined an interview.

Coen instead agreed to a new, three-year contract with Tampa Bay that would have made him the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator, although it was conditional on him not having another interview with the Jags.

However, Coen never showed up to sign the agreement and traveled to Jacksonville to meet with Khan and interim general manager Ethan Waugh.

Khan said earlier this month that he wanted a head coach who would bring more creativity to Jacksonville, saying “he’s unpredictable, I think it’s modern football and we have to be able to show that on the field.”

“To reiterate my message earlier this week, I am deeply committed to building winners here in Jacksonville,” Khan said in a statement. “I also believe that I am judged by actions, not words. That is why I took swift and decisive action this week to hire Liam Cohen as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.”

Coen was the architect of one of Tampa Bay’s most productive offenses in its history in 2024. The Buccaneers ranked third in the NFL in passing yards (399.6 per game) and fourth in scoring (29.5).

“Becoming the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars is an opportunity of a lifetime, and one that I will run with to instill a championship culture and winning tradition here in Duval,” Coen said.

“This does not happen without the support and opportunities my family and I have provided throughout my career, especially during this past season in Tampa Bay. We thank Todd Bowles for his continued support and the entire Buccaneers organization for the experience and knowledge. We will have success ahead of us.”
