Catherine, Princess of Wales, said Tuesday that her cancer is in remission, about 10 months after announcing her diagnosis. Princess Kate announced this on social media after visiting a London hospital where she was being treated.
“It’s a relief to be in remission now and I’m staying focused on recovery,” she said in it post on Instagram after visiting the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis knows, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”
The princess had announced last March that the cancer was discovered after an abdominal surgery and she underwent preventive chemotherapy.
In September, she said she did completed chemotherapy. During her visit on Tuesday, she talked about her cancer treatment. “It’s really hard,” she said, according to the Associated Press. “It’s such a shock.”
Kate spoke to patient Katherine Field about the chemotherapy port used for the treatment, saying, “I got so attached to it,” and joked that she was almost hesitant to have it removed, AP reports.
Kate took to social media on Tuesday to say she visited the hospital to thank the staff “for looking after me so well over the last year”.
“My heartfelt thanks to everyone who has walked quietly by William and I’s side as we’ve been through it all,” she said, referring to her husband, the Prince of Wales. “We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we received throughout my time as a patient was exceptional.”
Kensington Palace also announced that she and William had become patrons of the hospital.
“I hope that by supporting ground-breaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting the well-being of patients and families, we can save many more lives and transform the experience of all cancer patients,” Kate said on social media.
Since 2007, William has been the president of the hospital. his mother, Princess Dianahe also held that position, according to the palace. The hospital is known as the world’s leading cancer center with three locations in London.
During her visit on Tuesday, Kate spoke with other patients, as well as doctors and nurses, reports the British news agency Press Association.
“Our bodies are amazing at telling us ‘you have to take your time,'” she said after learning of one man’s diagnosis.
She also talked about getting a cancer diagnosis, according to the news agency.
“It’s the uncertainty of that initial diagnosis,” she said. “It’s such a wealth of information. Understanding the diagnosis, it’s a huge amount of information to take in as a patient. Having that continuity, in the clinical setting and outside of the home setting, is really important.”
