Kamala Harris makes Trump’s 2024 presidential victory official during a joint session of Congress
Congress officially certified President-elect Trump in 2024 election victory on Monday, putting him one step closer to taking over the Oval Office at the end of this month.
It was the last step before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
The orderly process is in stark contrast to the scene in the chamber of the House of Representatives four years ago when rioters protesting the results of the 2020 election halted proceedings and forced lawmakers into hiding for several hours.

Vice President Kamala Harris he presided over the confirmation of Trump’s victory, after losing to him in the November election in which the Republicans won the presidency and both houses of Congress.
Harris recorded a video message that was released before the certification, telling viewers, “The peaceful transfer of power is one of the most fundamental principles of American democracy. Like any other principle, it is what distinguishes our system of government from a monarchy or a tyranny.”

Democrats and Republicans had starkly different reactions ahead of Monday, with lawmakers on the right celebrating a new era in Washington and those on the left glumly commenting on the violent scenes since Jan. 6, 2021.
“Today I will vote to confirm the election of President Donald J. Trump. It’s time to save America!” Tail. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., wrote on X.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, wrote on the page: “Four years ago today, Trump incited a deadly insurgency after losing a free and fair election. Today there is only snow on the steps of the Capitol, not angry mobs pounding the his way to desecrate and hurt.”

At the Truth Social before the certification, Trump said, “TODAY CONGRESS CONFIRMED OUR BIG ELECTION VICTORY — A BIG MOMENT IN HISTORY. MAGA!”

Lawmakers gathered on Capitol Hill to confirm the election, despite a heavy snowstorm that kept many federal offices and public schools in the Washington, DC area closed for the day.
Republican leaders in Congress urged lawmakers to stay in the capital over the weekend to avoid potential travel problems.
