Jurrien Timber reveals the Arsenal team’s reaction to the controversial Myles Lewis-Skelly red card
Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber admitted the Gunners “know how to deal” with being a man down and didn’t talk much about it during the interval at Molineux on Saturday after playing more than half of their 1-0 win over ten-man Wolves .
Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off shortly before half-time for what referee Michael Oliver deemed to be a foul Seriously bad game In a cynical breaking counter attack, he caught Matt Doherty on the side of the ankle and the top of the foot.
It was seen as harsh by many, with the likes of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright among those who took issue with the decision, which was upheld by VAR. Sam Timber was booked for dissent after that, while Kai Havertz went down on his knee some 20 yards out as he saw the red card stick.
It was a high fourth red card for Arsenal In the Premier League this season. But after drawing previous games against Brighton & Hove Albion (Declan Rice) and Manchester City (Leandro Trossard), and losing against Bournemouth (William Saliba), this was the first time the Gunners had won in 2024/25 with ten player. It may also have helped that Wolves were similarly reduced to ten midfield through the second half moments before Riccardo Calafiori scored the winner.
“I didn’t expect it to be a red card, to be honest. But it happens, you have to react. We can’t keep talking about red cards,” Timber told reporters afterwards.
“We didn’t talk about that much at halftime either. It’s not the first time. It’s still difficult, but we also know how to deal with it now. It’s not nice to enter the second half, but it is what it is.
“You have to react. It’s the only thing you can do, it’s the only thing in your hands. Sometimes it’s frustrating, but mentally, emotionally, you have to find a way to get over it and pick it up as a team. We did it.”
Manager Mikel Arteta has expressed confidence that Lewis-skelly would see his red card overturned by the Premier League, an acknowledgment that the Gunners are ready to appeal the decision.
