Jon Stewart grimaces at Harris being forced to confirm Trump’s election victory


In one of the most pressing media moments of the week, comedian Jon Stewart she compared Vice President Kamala Harris presiding over the certification of her election defeat to being mocked at “her own funeral.”

As is tradition, joint session of Congress convened on Monday to count the votes of the Electoral College and officially confirm the results. As Senate president, Harris, who lost to President-elect Donald Trump in the November election, joined the other two vice presidents in recent history who had to overcome their own presidential defeat.

Liberal late-night hosts, including Stewart, winced at the awkward situation as they cracked jokes on their Monday night shows.

“Of course, the ultimate indignity this January 6th is that Donald Trump’s opponent Kamala Harris, being the vice president, is serving as master of ceremonies,” Stewart responded on “The Daily Show,” referring to the four-year anniversary ceremony. riots on the Capitol.

“Poor baby… But that’s bullshit,” Stewart added.

Stewart played a video clip of Harris reading the Electoral College votes Trump received before cheers broke out in the hall.

“That must hurt,” Stewart said afterward, grimacing.

“She says, ‘Hey, I hear you,'” he continued. “It’s like attending your own funeral, and even the mourners say, ‘Whoah!'”

“I can’t think of anything more embarrassing than standing there while the crowd applauds your opponent,” he said.

After Democrats broke into cheers after Harris read her own electoral votes, Stewart joked, “There’s a lot of cheer in that room. I think she can still win this thing!”

“Just need to find about 130,000 votes in Georgia! And then some in Michigan, Pennsylvania and maybe Wisconsin. Maybe North Carolina…” he paused.

The comedian concluded the segment by praising the civility of the certification ceremony.

“It’s amazing how smoothly our democracy runs when you don’t act like a dick when you lose. Not naming names! Just sayin’,” he said.

Congressional confirmation of the election was the last step before Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

Harris, in her role as Senate president, became the first vice president to oversee congressional confirmation of his or her election defeat since then-Vice President Al Gore did so in January 2001, after losing the 2000 election to George W. Bush.

Four decades earlier, then-Vice President Richard Nixon presided over the confirmation of his narrow 1960 election defeat to John F. Kennedy.
