James Carville tells Democrats to let Trump ‘get away’
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville pleaded with Democrats to allow it President Donald Trump “to hit each other,” on MSNBC’s “The Beat” with Katie Phang on Friday.
“I mean, look, he’s just saying whatever he wants to say. I mean, how many stories do I have to read that the delta stinker has nothing to do with this, but he’s just going to keep walking? OK. And we’ve got to learn as Democrats to just let him kill himself ” said Carville, referring to it Trump’s comments accusing California Governor Gavin Newsome of prioritizing endangered fish over protecting the state’s residents from wildfires.
Carville said Democrats should take a page from Muhammad Ali’s book, saying, “Just remember, this is a little before your time, but people of my generation remember Muhammad Ali and his drugs. He just let you go… the first 6 or 7 rounds , and then you go in and pair up, and then you start dropping bombs.”

As stated by Breitbarthe also warned Democrats not to lose the forest for the trees and to focus on whether Trump has followed through on key campaign promises, rather than fighting him over every little issue.
“It’s hard to sit here and just look at one thing, you know, Greenland, Canada, the Panama Canal Zone, the delta smelled it, whatever you want. But you just have to keep jumping and weaving and jumping and weaving. and then in due time you’ll be able to get in .But the big thing is his number one promise, the biggest political promise of this generation, is to lower food prices. Then he came into office and said, ‘I can’t do that, of course eggs are $4 and something a dozen.'”
Carville believes that if they resist the urge to fight Trump on every issue and focus on the big picture, Democrats will be back in the saddle quickly.
“It keeps distracting us and it keeps distracting us. But we’re going to get back in and we’re going to ride this target and get it in range before long, I think.”

These comments from Carvile come on the heels of similar comments the strategist made recently.
He told CNN’s Michael Smeconish on Jan. 4 that Democrats have focused too much on attacking Trump in the 2024 election and that voters “don’t want an election about you or your opponent. And because of too much, we lost that. I lost that myself. We did it on Trump, and we didn’t do it about voters.”
Carville has been a prominent media presence throughout the 2024 presidential race, advising his party on how to defeat Trump and criticizing its messaging when he saw fit.
