BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Reuters) – Selena Gomez, Timothee Chalamet and other Hollywood stars will gather in Beverly Hills on Sunday for the annual Golden Globes, the first major awards ceremony of the year without a clear front-runner for film’s biggest honors.
Netflix’s (NASDAQ: ) Spanish-language musical thriller “Emilia Perez” and “The Brutalist,” a 3-1/2-hour post-World War II drama that includes an interlude, lead the films vying for Globe trophies.
Others include the box office hit “Wicked,” an adaptation of the Broadway play about witches in “The Wizard of Oz” and the papal selection story “Conclave.”
Restaurant story “The Bear” and mystery comedy “Only Murders in a Building” will compete for TV honors.
The Globes will air live on CBS and the Paramount+ streaming service starting at 8pm ET on Sunday (1am GMT). Stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser hosts the champagne ceremony for the first time.
Glaser, who hosted football legend Tom Brady’s roast last year, said she plans to celebrate the A-list nominees rather than mock them as some previous hosts have done.
“I want people who are nominated to feel proud of themselves. I don’t want them to feel attacked,” Glaser said in an interview. “I’m really excited to show these jokes to a huge audience.”
The host lineup includes household names such as Dwayne Johnson, Elton John, Andrew Garfield and Awkwafina.
Winning the Globes can focus attention on films and performances ahead of the Oscars in March. So far, awards experts say, there is no clear front-runner for the coveted Best Picture award at the Oscars.
Unlike the Oscars, the Globes divide films into two categories. “Conclave” and “The Brutalist” are considered strong entries for best motion picture drama, while “Wicked” and “Emilia Perez” are leading contenders for best motion picture musical or comedy.
Globe winners are chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, compared to roughly 9,000 voters who choose the Oscars. The Globe’s voting body has been expanded in recent years, and organizers have launched reforms after being criticized for ethical lapses and a lack of diversity.
Chalamet is up for best actor in a motion picture drama for his portrayal of musician Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” His competition is Adrien Brody, who portrays a Holocaust survivor and architect chasing the American dream in “The Brutalist.”
Gomez was nominated twice for her supporting role in “Emilia Perez,” the story of a Mexican drug lord who becomes a woman, and for lead actress in a comedy as a podcaster in the TV series “Only Murders in the Building.”
Other acting nominations include Angelina Jolie for her portrayal of opera star Maria Callas in “Maria,” Nicole Kidman as a corporate executive having an affair with an intern in “Babygirl,” Zendaya as a tennis coach in “Challengers” and Ariana Grande as a wizarding student in ” Wicked”.
Among men, Daniel Craig is nominated for “Queer” and Denzel Washington for “Gladiator II.”
