SEOUL (Reuters) – At least 28 people were killed on Sunday after a passenger plane skidded off the runway and crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, Yonhap news agency reported.
The accident occurred as the Jeju Air plane, which was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members on a flight from Thailand, was landing at an airport in the south of the country, according to the report.
Two people have been found alive as the rescue mission continues, according to Yonhap.
Authorities were working to rescue people in the tail section, an airport official told Reuters.
Photos shared by local media show smoke and flames engulfing parts of the plane.
Acting President Choi Sung-mok, who was named the country’s interim leader on Friday after the previous acting president was impeached amid the ongoing political crisis, ordered a comprehensive rescue effort, his office said.
A Jeju Air spokesman said the airline was checking the reports.
