Gautam Gambhir’s resignation on the cards? BCCI will warm up the head coach and decide the fate of the Rohit-Kohli Test

Indian national cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir will be on the receiving end of some pointed questions from the BCCI following the team’s poor showing under his leadership as coach. According to reports in Dainik Jagran, it is learned that the BCCI will hold a review meeting at its headquarters in Mumbai on Monday (January 13).

Reports claimed that Gautam Gambhir will be asked about the reasons behind the ODI series loss in Sri Lanka after 27 years, the 0-3 clean sweep at home against New Zealand and the Border Gavaskar Trophy defeat after 10 years, followed by elimination from the finals of the ICC World testing championship in 2025.

The meeting will be attended by Roger Binny, Rajeev Shukla, Devajit Saikia, Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar

Gautam Gambhir will be joined by BCCI President Roger Binny, Vice President Rajeev Shukla, Interim Secretary Devajit Saikia, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and other officials at the meeting and they will discuss the issues that will happen in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Things are not going well for Gautam Gambhir in his tenure as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team. While the team is doing extremely well in the T20Is, the side has witnessed a major decline in the ODIs as well as in the longest format of the game.

India won the Test series against Bangladesh by a 2–0 margin, but then faced a 3–0 defeat at home against New Zealand, their first series defeat in 12 years at home. After that, they faced a poor 3-1 defeat against the Australian national cricket team in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

BCCI wants answers from head coach Gautam Gambhir as well as chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar

Apart from the Perth Test, India looked extremely poor in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gautam Gambhir’s role as head coach has come under scrutiny as many of his decisions have been highlighted in the media and the BCCI is ready to question them as well.

Gambhir’s decision to play two spinners in Sydney despite a green pitch could also be questioned along with the dressing room leaks. Reports add that the BCCI is unhappy with the loss in the tour of Sri Lanka, the home series against New Zealand and the tour of Australia.

The governing body wants answers from head coach Gambhir as well as chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. However, the BCCI is against accepting some big calls, especially with the T20I and ODIs series around the corner, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be played next month.

Reports add that Gambhir and his support will not be fired for now as BCCI’s main focus is on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The team selection for the England series as well as the eight-nation tournament will also be discussed in the meeting.

It is learned that Suryakumar Yadav will continue as the T20I captain while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s place in ODIs is secure. However, their place in Tests will be debated.
