Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff blames IPL for Indian team’s downfall at BCCI meeting

A review meeting by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following the poor results of the Indian national cricket team has reportedly led to the board taking tough steps. The governing body, along with selectors, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma were present in the meeting.

This comes after the Indian national cricket team performed extremely poorly after the T20 World Cup 2024. They faced an ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka after 27 years. After that, they suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to New Zealand and then lost to Australia 3-1, losing their place in the ICC World Cup finals.

Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff were questioned about the team’s poor performances and the management blamed the IPL

During the screening meeting, according to reports in Dainik Jagran, it was learned that Gambhir and his coaching staff were asked about the team’s poor performances in ODIs and Tests. This development was revealed by a BCCI official working in the Mumbai office.

But to everyone’s surprise, the team management blamed the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to reports, a board member of the Gautam Gambhir-led team is learned to have said that the big IPL contracts are one of the main reasons why the team is struggling. One of the members stated that the players do not give their best for the national team in the longest format because of the big IPL jobs.

Staff member Gautam Gambhir mentions that many players did not play with full intensity in Australia

A member of Gambhir’s staff is learned to have mentioned that many players did not play with full intensity and commitment in the Tests. This was reportedly cited as one of the reasons for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat.

The Indian national cricket team, under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir, is having a torrid time in these two formats. While the team has performed extremely well in T20Is, the performance has been extremely poor in ODIs as well as in the longest format of the game.

In the last two Test series, India’s batting has been one of the poor reasons for the team’s defeat. Both at home and in Australia, batsmen have failed to capitalize. The bowlers were decent but did not get any support from the batsmen, who saw the team struggling.

Gautam Gambhir’s future as head coach will be decided after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

There have been several reports that Gautam Gambhir’s future as head coach and Rohit Sharma’s as captain will be discussed only after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The team’s performance in the tournament will decide the fate of the duo and if they fail, there may be a new set-up.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is all set to be played from February 19. The Indian cricket team will play all their matches in the UAE and will open their campaign against the Bangladesh cricket team on February 20.
