Gareth Taylor responds to Man City’s transfer links with Carolina
Manchester City coach Gareth Taylor refused to be drawn into the North Carolina Courage striker Carolina at his latest media conference.
The former WSL winners quickly signed Rebecca Knaak from Sweden’s FC Rosengard earlier this month, adding defensive reinforcements as a replacement for the injured Alex Greenwood.
Taylor also faces problems in the forward zones, with Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp among those sidelined. With the amount of injuries threatening to derail their season, City boss insists they are doing everything they can this month to ensure the team can stay competitive for the remainder of the campaign.
“No update [on transfers]”, Taylor told reporters before the derby in Manchester. “It’s really hard to give you any news while so many wheels are still turning.
“We are working extremely hard behind the scenes to try and help and support the team a little bit more. Losing Alex [Greenwood]Lauren [Hemp] and Bunny [Shaw to injury]three really key players, it’s difficult for any team.
“We are trying to get the necessary support, but we are working in a difficult period. But there is still a little time left.”
One of the names that has been linked in recent days is the Brazilian national team member Karolin. Her former club, the North Carolina Courage, confirmed earlier this week that the 25-year-old intends to continue free agency now that her contract has expired.
“It is difficult for me to comment on a player who is not officially ours,” he said when asked about the rumors about Karolin. “At this point, I wouldn’t have to comment.
“I know there’s a lot of speculation, but we like to do things the right way.”
Karolin was named the 2023 NWSL MVP, but struggled for form last season due to injury issues. Reports point to a number of clubs including Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, have shown an interest in the player, but City appear to have struck a deal.
On what a potential arrival could mean for Chloe Kelly, who is out of contract in the summer, Taylor added: “We have a good history together. While she’s here, she’s the same as any other player.
“She’s considered, she’s respected and whether she plays or not, she’s a part of what we do. Anything beyond that is really hard for me to speculate on.”
