(Reuters) – Memorial services for former US President Jimmy Carter are expected to be held over six days in Georgia and Washington, DC, after he died on December 29 at the age of 100.
Here are some details about his funeral plan:
WHEN IS THE FUNERAL?
Carter’s (NYSE: ) state funeral, a national honor traditionally reserved for heads of state, began Saturday, Jan. 4, with ceremonies in Carter’s home state of Georgia, according to a schedule released by the U.S. military.
It culminates with a service at the National Cathedral on January 9 in Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
COLUMN, PUBLIC VIEW
The motorcade will take Carter through his hometown to Atlanta, with a stop at the nation’s capitol, and then to the Carter Presidential Center, where he will lie in repose until he is flown to Washington on Tuesday, January 7.
In Washington, he will lie in state in the Rotunda of the US Capitol from January 7th until the morning of January 9th. George HW Bush was the last US president to lie in state there, a tradition that goes back to Abraham Lincoln.
Members of Congress will honor Carter beginning at 3:00 pm ET (2000 GMT) on Tuesday, and the public will be invited from 7:00 pm to midnight on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday from 7:00 am ET.
A funeral service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, January 9 at 10 a.m. ET.
President Joe Biden said last year that Carter asked him to deliver the eulogy at the service. President-elect Donald Trump has said he will attend.
Afterwards, Carter will be flown back to Georgia and buried in a private ceremony in Plains.
