Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederixen says that the country has received significant support from colleagues of European countries because he is seeking support to fight the threats of the United States of Donald Trump to take control of Greenland.
Trump said that the Arctic Island – an autonomous Danish territory – is vital to US national security and has refused to exclude the use of military force to acquire territories.
Frederixen visited three European capital on Tuesday, meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
“I have no reason to believe that there is a military threat to Greenland or Denmark,” Frederixen told Danish media before meeting Rutte in Brussels on Tuesday.
Speaking earlier with Macron in Paris, Danish Prime Minister told reporters that she had received “great support” from Europe.
Chancellor Scholz, who met with Frederixen, emphasized that “the boundaries should not be driven by force.” He also said that “the times we live in are challenging” and emphasized the need for strong Europe and NATO.
The Danish Prime Minister praised the consensus, saying, “This is a very, very clear message … Yes, of course, there must be respect for the territory and sovereignty of states.”
The meetings appear at the Nordic Summit over the weekend, where all leaders shared concerns about the situation, according to Frederixen.
Copenhagen also announced this week that he would assign 14.6 billion crowns ($ 2 billion) in order to increase the cost of defense in the region. The funds will pay for three new fregates and drones with advanced recording technology. The country also plans to enhance its satellite capabilities.
