Callum Simpson can be the next British star of super-medium weight, says George Groves | Boxing news
Since the pensions of George Groves, James Degale and Carl Frocha, Britain has been waiting for her next star-shaped star.
But Groves believes that British and Commonwealth Champion Callum Simpson could follow their footsteps.
“He already has a huge monitoring. In that view, he will be worried because he is commercially valuable. The people of Barnsley are behind him, and beyond,” Groves said Sky Sports.
“I think while going through levels that will only get bigger. From what I saw from Callum Simpson, I really like it. I really like his attitude. I like the way it struggles.
“Somehow he cracked on a late scene. It’s not like an amateur star who even saw him talking about him before people. So, I respect it too. I like it about him.
“You would fight to say that Callum Simpson can reach the top because no reason to doubt it. We just want to see it in great fights.”
Simpson, just three weeks after the last fight, accepts a brief task to defend the Commonwealth title against Elvis Ahorgah at this Arena Wembley on Saturday, live on Sky Sports.
“I think this is great. Obviously, someone’s loss is someone’s gain. Maybe when Isaac Chamberlain-Riley Riley struggled, there were openings to improve this show, and they brought Callum recently after a good victory last month,” Groves said.
If he is a winning Simpson, later this year he will be sought at the Oakwell Stadium in Barnsley. With its popularity, Simpson may not even need such a home game that Groves had is DEGALEA and FROCH.
“Continue that momentum and a huge struggle in Oakwell. He will need a serious struggle for that. He doesn’t necessarily have to be a rival or big name or what already. But it has to be something that can be sold. But I like it,” Groves said.
So could you become the new George Groves? “It could be,” Groves said. “It’s a little too nice.
“You need people who do not deserve to be in front of you randomly in front of you to get George Groves out,” he added with a laugh. “And then he pastes the knife! But we may not see that with Callum.”
