Brooke Shields she admitted that she lived in “agony” because of her late mother’s alloholism.
Shields opened up about her relationship with her mom, Teri Shields, in her memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Grow Old. Teri passed away in October 2012 after a long illness with dementia.
“My mom always presented herself as non-judgmental—she really put a cap on it—but she didn’t seem that way to me,” Shields wrote in her memoir, according to Daily Mail. “I always felt like I was going to be in trouble for something, or that I was in the wrong, and I often waited for the other shoe to drop. That’s a result of being raised by an alcoholic.”
“My mother’s alcoholism was a constant source of agony for me, and I was always a bit timid and on edge,” she continued. “Work, even though I knew that both the industry and public opinion were fickle, I felt stable in the sense that when you were on set, the space was closed and there were rules you had to follow. You and your schedule were always It was liberating in a way.”
Shields’ mother was her manager when the actress was only 11 months old. While Shields felt “stable” on set, she didn’t know what to expect from her mother at home.

“I wanted to protect my own children from living with feelings of instability, uncertainty or fear, so I built in routine and rituals wherever I could,” she explained in her memoir. “I encouraged them to be outspoken and opinionated, not timid. I encouraged them to speak their mind.”
“I wanted them to know that nothing is off limits, that we can talk about anything,” Shields continued. “That doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences, but we would discuss why they acted in a certain way.”

However, her relationship with her late mom was “complicated”.
“All my life I went to her for absolutely everything,” the model wrote, Daily Mail reports. “Yes, I was afraid of being judged or reprimanded. Yes, I felt guilty whenever I thought my behavior would disappoint her.”
“And yet the attraction to her was so strong,” she added. “There was a magnetic field around her, and even when I knew better, I was always drawn back. Love is a very powerful motivator.”

Shields’ relationship with her mother and her career were explored in the documentary “Pretty Baby,” which premiered in 2023.
The film mainly focused on the controversies that happened while she was acting and modeling in her youth.
