Boxing results: Justis Huni defeats Shaun Potgieter in second round by TKO
Heavyweight contender Justis Huni (12-0, 7 KOs) scored a light second-round TKO over Shaun Potgieter (10-2, 7 KOs) on Wednesday night’s Jai Opetaia v David Nyika undercard at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach , Queensland, Australia.
Huni’s Power Display
Huni, 25, injured South African Potgieter with a right hand to the head in the second round. He then landed a few more heavy punches and referee Phil Austin stepped in to stop the contest. Stoppage time was 0:33 of the second round.
The Aussie, Huni, looked slow but strong with his right hand. He didn’t have to worry about anything coming back from Potgieter, which was his luck. It would be interesting to know why Potgieter was chosen as Huni as he did not look fit and looked quite old.
Huni really struggled to beat Kevin Lerena last March and he torched him during their 10 round fight. He barely won that fight. Tonight was more about giving Huni a softer opponent to make him look good.
It is too early to know how far Huni can go in the sport. He has to be ranked high enough to challenge for the world title to get a nice salary. He doesn’t look ready to fight the big dogs in the division, such as IBF champion Daniel Dubois.
“The more active I am, the better I will be. I have to take care of some injuries, but as soon as I can, I will be back in the ring,” Justis Huni told DAZN following a second-round knockout of Shaun Potgieter on Wednesday night.
“I will leave it to my team. They have done a good job with me so far. I believe I can go all the way.”
It would be nice to see Justis go up against Moses Itauma. It would be an entertaining battle between two powerful batsmen. Both are similar in the way they move forward slowly and are easy to hit.
“This guy is almost here. You have another potential heavyweight champion in Justis Huni. He’s in the top 15 in three governing bodies,” said Eddie Hearn. “The strength and conditioning team did a great job. The speed is back.
“Confidence is back. As he said, he got over a small injury. You will see him in a few months. Huge 2025 for Justis Huni.
