Blue state government has reversed course after vowing to fight Trump’s deportation efforts, now hopes to fix border
Gov. Maura Healey, D-Massachusetts, is now hoping the Trump administration will resolve the border crisis after previously vowing to fight her immigration measures.
“In just the last two years of my administration … we’ve seen an increase in the numbers in shelters because of the failure of Congress to fix the border,” Healey said Boston Public Radio Tuesday.
“I mean, that’s what happened. We saw an increase in the numbers. Donald Trump killed that bill a year ago … he continued to fix the border. Now he has an opportunity with the House and the Senate and being in charge of the administration, ” said the governor. – I hope he will.

Healey spoke of concerns about a migrant who was reportedly caught Thursday with at least $750,000 worth of drugs and an AR-15 rifle at a hotel being used as a temporary shelter.
The suspect, Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, born in the Dominican Republic, faces charges of firearms and drug trafficking while using the state’s shelter system. The 28-year-old was found at the Quality Inn in Revere, Massachusetts, which is currently being used as a shelter.
“I was outraged like everyone else,” Healey told Boston Public Radio hosts.
On Monday, the governor issued a statement saying, “I have ordered an inspection of all shelter units, starting with the Revere site, and a full review of our intake processes to determine any additional steps we can take to prevent criminal activity in the shelters.”
Healey’s comments followed her vowed to obstruct President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement plan shortly after the election.

Healey said on MSNBC in November that her state police will “absolutely not” cooperate with the new Trump administration’s expected mass deportation efforts and warned that they will use “every tool in the toolbox” to “protect our citizens.”
“I think it’s important that we all understand that there will be a lot of pressure on states and state officials. I can assure you that we will work hard on that,” she said at the time. “So I think the key is that, you know, every tool in the toolbox has to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents and to protect our states and to hold the line of democracy and the rule of law as a basic principle.”
Healey’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tom Homan, President-elect Trump’s “border czar,” has warned state and local officials that they are obstructing the new administration’s efforts to catch illegal immigrants.
“The president has been clear, we will focus immediately on threats to public safety and national security,” Homan he said during an interview with Fox News. “If they don’t want to help us, then get out of the way, we will.”

Massachusetts is one of a number of states that have been overwhelmed by the wave of migrants coming from the southern border.
In 2023 Healey said of his conditionmigrants are “attracted here because we are and have proudly been a beacon to those in need”.
