Arsenal in negotiations to sign an “electric” star who could be another Saka

Entering the January transfer window, one thing is completely clear compared to any other problem in the Premier League; Arsenal players need to be signed. They also need to sign contracts with strikers.

Before the start of the match with Aston Villa, Mikel Arteta he had arguably one of the worst benches in the league at his disposal and all told Raheem Sterling was the only option he called upon, and even then it wasn’t until the last ten minutes of the game.

Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho were options, but with the Gunners needing a goal, they could only call on Sterling with first-team experience. Other options included 19-year-old Ismeal Kabia and 22-year-old Nathan Butler-Oyadeji.

So that probably explains the connections with players like Alexander Isak and Benjamin Šeškodon’t you think so?

No new defenders, right? So think again. Another full-back could be on his way to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are eyeing the Bayern Munich star

Over the last few years, Arteta has made a strong effort to strengthen the club’s defensive line and to his credit, he has done an admirable job in that sector.

No team has conceded fewer goals (29) than the Gunners in the last season of the Premier League. The problem is that many of them are prone to injury.

We still haven’t seen the best of Riccaro Calafiori who just can’t stay fit, while Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White are currently sidelined with injuries.

That being said, it is very likely that the aforementioned Tierney and Zinchenko will leave in the coming months. The Scot is out of contract while the latter has expired linked with Borussia Dortmund in recent days. Maybe some money will be needed?

Well, one of them could be the Bayern Munich sensation Alphonso Davies. That’s it according to reports in Spain who suggest Arsenal and Liverpool are keen to convince the Canadian to sign for them instead of Real Madrid.

Davies is closing in on a new contract with Bayern, with his current terms set to expire in the summer when he would become a free agent if he does not put pen to paper.

Arsenal are therefore on red alert, and along with Arne Slot, they have ‘intensified contacts with the player’s agents’ in an attempt to bring him to English football.

Why would Davies be a great signing for Arsenal?

Yes, Arsenal need attacking players, but in Davies they could sign a makeshift striker who can increase productivity at both ends of the pitch.

A natural winner, having won several Bundesliga titles with Bayern, he is an experienced player who could hit the ground running straight away.

Primarily a left-back, he would offer Arteta a different option than what he already has at his disposal.

While Calafiori is more of a brutal defender, Myles Lewis-Skelly has excelled in the reverse role in recent weeks, and data analyst Ben Mattinson is already suggesting The 18-year-old is “the best player in the league at drawing fouls.” Really nice compliments.

However, they lack that playful left-back, someone to bomb forward and support the attack. That’s where Davies could step in.

Moderate as joint seventh fastest player in Bundesliga historyit is obvious an “electric” player in Mattinson’s words and he could give Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard the kind of flank support we’ve seen Ben White give Bukayo Saka on the right over the years.

As we can see below, Davies is a completely different profile to someone like Lewis-Skelly and Calafiori, but he would offer so much in terms of ball-carrying and added attacking threat.

What is interesting to note is that Davies is not just a left back. Really, in his club career, he played on 45 occasions as a left winger and 16 times from the right wing.

For his country, Canada, the 24-year-old regularly features in a more prominent position in attack, notably starting two of the three games at the 2022 World Cup as a left winger. At the 2017 Gold Cup, he started two out of four matches on the right side.

There are exciting parallels here with a certain Saka. Of course, the England international started as a left-back in senior football before migrating further forward and eventually playing on the right. Saka has the same kind of ball-carrying ability as Davies, which leads us to believe that the Canadian could play regularly in a more attacking role for Arsenal.

He is still young enough to mold into something else and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that a player who boasts such speed and trickery could thrive in the final third. Saka stands as proof, as does Wales legend Gareth Bale.
