Former Indian national cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about the decision to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain of India’s team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He said the team has lined up a player who will be a safe pick in the playing XI of the year as the vice-captain.

But Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma reportedly took the decision, keeping the future in mind. Shubman was included in the leadership group after the 2024 T20 World Cup and was appointed to co-captain the teams in the white-ball formats and was retained by the selectors for the tournament.

Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about the decision to give Shubman Gill the vice-captaincy, saying he would not comment on whether it was the right call or not. He emphasized that the batsman was vice-captain in Sri Lanka and added that it was a futuristic call. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
“I don’t want to go into whether the decision was right or wrong, but the position that was taken was correct. He was vice-captain in the last series and also got that spot sometimes in test matches too, although I could be wrong there.
“This is a very futuristic call. They are looking at who could be the leader in the future. Now you have said that Axar Patel is the vice-captain in T20s. (But) there could be competition between Axar Patel and Jadeja for the same spot.”

Ravichandran Ashwin, while talking about the doubts over the place of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in the XI, said that the player who will be 100% in the XI has been made vice-captain. He added that the stability in the team is good and Gill can learn from the seniors. He added:
“Between Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, the latter is the main wicket-taker. Rishabh and KL could also play together. But the player who will 100 per cent be there in the playing eleven has become vice-captain.
“At the moment the stability is good and if for some reason Shubman has to captain in the future, then he can rely on people like Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah – there are a lot of people.”
