Arsenal have been in talks to sign the £25million striker

One of the most prominent links was the Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunhawho could be available for £80mbut recent reports are now hailing a potential alternative to the striker for a move to the Emirates this month.

According to a recent report from SpainArsenal are keen to sign a striker this year and have identified Botafogo star Igor Jesus as a potential candidate.

The report claims the Gunners have other long-term targets in mind for the number nine position, but currently view the Brazilian goal machine as a more realistic target for this month and one that won’t interfere with their summer plans.

Further reports from TEAMtalk believe they are active negotiations were held between Arsenal and the player’s agents with a consideration of £25 million.

Maybe big-name fans aren’t looking for this window, but given Jesus’ recent form and potential price, it seems like a brilliant market opportunity and a possible alternative to the expensive Cunha.

How Jesus is compared to Cunha

OK, so if Arsenal are considering bringing Jesus to the club this month instead of breaking the bank for Cunha, would that be a good idea?

To find the answer to that question, we need to compare the two forwards, starting with the metric that matters more than anything else for players at their position: performance.

For his part, the Wolves star racked up an impressive tally ten goals and four assists in 22 appearances, which means he currently averages a goal every 1.57 games for a Premier League side.

In contrast, the Botafogo star scored 25 goals and nine assists in 56 appearances across stints with Brazilian side and United Arab Emirates side Shabab Al-Ahli, which means he has maintained an average of a goal every 1.64 games. That type of shape he saw later praised for his “amazing” performances by journalist Zach Lowy.

So in terms of their average result in their last campaign, the Old Gold ace is ahead.

However, the 23-year-old dynamo, who a Brazilian soccer expert described as “blowing the team away” last season, he looked better while playing for the national team, scoring and assisting a goal in just four games, while the former Atlético Madrid ace has not yet do or in 11 caps.

Finally, the Cuiaba-born phenom, who is two years younger, has already made a habit of winning titles, doing so in the United Arab Emirates and then, more impressively, playing a key role in Botafogo’s league and Copa Libertadores double last season.

Ultimately, it’s probably true that Cunha would come in and have a more immediate impact on the team this month, but given his high price, he could disrupt summer transfer plans as well.

Therefore, if Arsenal want to improve their attacking options while saving big spending for the next window, Jesus could be the smarter signing.
