Arsenal are ‘open’ to signing players in January, says Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says the club could make moves in the January transfer window – if they can identify the right players.

The Gunners are six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League and are without winger Bukaya Saka through injury.

The club did not bring in any players last January, but Arteta says they could make a move this year.

He said, “I don’t know. The focus is on the players we have.

“If there is someone on the market who we can afford and we believe will have a real impact on the team, then we must always be open to that possibility.

“Right now the focus is on what we have.”

Team news

Saka remains sidelined for a long time, but Arsenal will have Kai Havertz available after illness for Saturday’s trip to Brighton.

Former Seagulls defender Ben White remains sidelined, while Takehiro Tomiyasu has returned to training but will not be rushed. Additional problems are the right side defender Jurrien Timber who is suspended.

However, Raheem Sterling could be back soon.

Arteta said: “He [Sterling] he’s starting to do some things on the field so that’s great news. Let’s see how he goes next week and we’ll see if he’s available next week.”
