Americans in the border country are calling on Trump to address immigration and complete the border wall

Immigration has been a constant on President Trump’s agenda since he entered politics, and Latinos in one Texas border county told Fox News Digital they fully support his efforts.

Starr County, Texas, which straddles the US-Mexico border, is nearly 100 percent Latino, and the district went Republican for for the first time in more than 130 years after Trump won it in the 2024 election.

Now Starr County residents see the border, immigration and the economy as top issues heading into the president’s second administration.

“The main things are protecting the borders and cleaning up the economy, getting these horrible prices that have gone up again,” said Marcus Canales, Starr County GOP chairman.

David Porras, a former farmer who switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP in 2024, said he wants to see Trump follow through on his promise to tackle inflation, immigration and the economy.

“I personally sold some property to the US Army Corps of Engineers,” he said, referring to the construction of the border wall. “So we went along with it. Trump believes in building a wall.”

His comments are in line with Fox News pollwhich found that a quarter of voters said Trump’s main focus should be on the economy/jobs, inflation and high prices, while another 13 percent said immigration and deportation should be their No. 1 priority.

Other residents also told Fox News Digital they support Trump’s efforts to complete the border wall during his second term in office.

Amanda Garcia, vice president of the Starr County Republican Women, said the border wall should be the first thing Trump should focus on after being sworn in.

“We have to get it done because living right here, we live in a border town,” she said. “It’s important to make sure that families are taken care of and that we do the whole immigration process the right way.”

Ross, the Starr County GOP member, agreed, saying border security is one of the first things he’d like Trump to address when he takes office.

Alberto Olivares, who previously ran for TX County Sheriff and served as a Customs and Border Protection agent for 26 years, echoed a similar sentiment. He said the border and the economy are “two of the most important priorities for our country” and “the things I hear people here complain about the most.”

Jay Pena, attorney Rio Grande City in Starr Countyhe said the border was “ugly and harsh, but a necessary solution.”

“I think it’s hard to open the door to other ideas that might work in the long term, and that’s why a border wall is really the only solution that’s needed,” he added.

When asked what she would like to see from the Trump administration, Oneida, a member of the Starr County Republican Women, said she would like to see the wall completed.

Amanda said being so close to the border makes immigration personal for her and her neighbors in Starr County.

“We see a lot of things going on that aren’t about racism or what we want … as far as what’s better for us,” she said. “But it’s for families, kids come and it all comes back to the kids. I think there’s a lot of abuse, a lot of things that don’t get talked about that need to be addressed.”

Olivares predicted that Trump would keep his promise and finish the border wall.

“These are the policies he established in his first term,” he said. “They’ve been successful. People have liked them. We’ve seen a lot of success in the Border Patrol over the last two years in his first term and I expect that to continue.”

“He made a promise, I believe in him and I believe he’s going to get it done,” said Marissa, a Starr County resident.
