All players out for semi-final clash with Tottenham
Liverpool look for a second win over Tottenham Hotspur in just a few weeks when they travel to north London on Wednesday in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
The Reds were extremely triumphant in their last visit, beating an injured and underachieving Spurs side 6-3 in the Premier League. A three-goal deficit at the end of Wednesday’s game would more or less secure Liverpool a place at Wembley.
Spurs have been plagued by fitness issues in recent months and Liverpool will want to take full advantage of their midweek woes. Arne Slot has an almost fully healthy squad after the draw with Manchester United at the weekend, even if he could rotate his squad in the capital.
They are here Liverpool players missing in the clash with Tottenham.
Ibrahima Konata’s return from injury was celebrated this weekend, with the French defender returning against Man Utd after five weeks in the treatment room. However, he switched places with Joe Gomez, who now finds himself on the sidelines.
The versatile Gomez replaced Konate in the starting line-up during his absence but picked up a hamstring injury in the 5-0 win over West Ham United in Liverpool’s final game of 2024. Slot confirmed he will be out for “a few weeks”, meaning he is unlikely to return by the end of January.
There are no injury problems for Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored and produced an excellent performance in last month’s win over Spurs, but the Hungarian is currently struggling with illness. He missed the draw with Man Utd at the weekend as a result and his ingenuity was sorely missed.
Slot did not rule Szoboszlai out of contention for Wednesday’s game, but warned against a potential return for the clash with Tottenham.
“Yesterday [Monday] he was not inside [training] more. If he’s here today, I doubt he’ll be ready to start the game. But we hope it’s here today. It wasn’t yesterday,” Slot revealed.
