A fire at the Moss Landing power plant causes evacuations and the closure of Highway 1


Monterey County sent out an emergency alert on Thursday evening to say that the Northern District Fire Department was responding to a fire at the Moss Landing power plant in central California and that some areas were under evacuation orders.

Released by the Moss County Sheriff’s Office emergency evacuation orders for the Vistra Power Plant fire in the areas of Moss Landing south of Elkhorn Slough, north of Molera Road and Monterey Dunes Way, as well as west of Castroville Blvd and ElkHorn Road.

The severity of the fire is unknown at this time, but it has caused authorities to close Highway 1 and warn those in the Moss Landing area behind the power plant to close their homes, according to Monterey County Clerks.

“Out of an abundance of caution, NCFPD is urging residents in the MRY-B047 and MRY-B053 zones to close windows and doors and turn off air systems until further notice. Please avoid the area so emergency vehicles can respond,” the statement said.

There is currently no estimated reopening time. In the meantime, northbound traffic is being diverted to highway 183, and southbound traffic is being diverted to Struve road.

A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Castroville Recreation Center (at 11261 Crane St., Castroville) for evacuees who need assistance.

The the cause of the fire has not been determined and will be investigated after the fire is extinguished.
