6 players who could join or leave Newcastle
After a mixed start to the 2024/25 season. Eddie Howe now there is Newcastle United play well as they seek a return to Champions League after missing this appointment.
Howe will also be hoping to lead the Magpies to their first major trophy in over half a century. The signs are good, as the club recently secured a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

Despite this good form of late, it is clear that reinforcements are needed if they are expected to maintain it, especially with a top four finish in Premier League table more than achievable this season.
Of course, there have been plenty of rumors of comings and goings at the Toon, but which players could Howe bring to the club and who could he sell to fund such purchases?

Newcastle United’s potential arrivals
Vitor Roque (Barcelona)
According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are watching closely the situation in which Barcelona forward Vitor Roque finds himself, who has struggled to make a big impact at the La Liga giants of his 40 million euros (£33m) moves from Brazil’s Athletic-PR in 2023.
The teenager scored only two goals for the club last term and is currently on loan at Real Betis, where he has scored six goals in 24 appearances for the club, which could help with a move away from Barcelona.
Alexander Isak is enjoying a wonderful campaign so far, but should he get injured, Howe only has Callum Wilson as back-up, suggesting that bringing in another striker is a potential priority this month.
Barcelona are now willing to sell Roque and Newcastle are one of the teams showing a lot of interest in doing a deal.
A lot will depend on the transfer fee, but if it is within Howe’s budget, he should consider making a bid for the Brazilian.
James McAtee (Manchester City)
It’s not just the center forward Newcastle that is looking for, like Howe seems interested on bringing Manchester City starlet James McAtee to the club this month.
The loan deal has been pending amid concerns the Magpies may not spend too much in the transfer window, but a temporary deal could do wonders for all parties involved.
Attacking midfielder played only ten times for City this term, scoring just one goal in the process, and it’s clear he needs more playing time to fulfill his incredible potential.
Howe could certainly get more out of McAtee than what Guardiola has done this season by giving him a regular platform to shine in the Premier League, making a loan move an easy move.
Jonathan David (Lille)
Jonathan David is a player admired by Newcastlebut moving this month may be out of the question. Howe could sign him to a pre-contract that the Canadian would sign in the summer.
According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Shethfour Premier League clubs have made bids to sign David on a pre-contract deal, but it remains to be seen if Newcastle are one of them.
Centarfor has scored 101 goals and registered 23 assists for the French team in 210 games. That works out to a goal proportion of every 1.7 games – a rate of goals that Howe would love to have in his side.
Considering how many clubs are reportedly looking for the 24-year-old, the Magpies have plenty of competition. With the club having the chance to secure Champions League football next term, this could possibly be the deciding factor in where David ends up after the 2024/25 campaign.

Newcastle United’s potential departures
Miguel Almiron (Crystal Palace, Wolves and others)
Miguel Almiron looks set to leave Newcastle sooner rather than later, as the club did he allegedly offered him in the Premier League Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leicester City.
The Paraguayan international was once a key player at St James’ Park, but it seems his future seems far away from the North East. The Magpies have set a price tag of €20-25m (£17-21m) for the player, which could tempt several clubs to make a move this month.
Charlotte FC, Santos, Botafogo, Sao Paulo and Palmeiras are also interested in the 30-year-old, and his sale could free up funds for future arrivals this winter.
Callum Wilson (contract expires this summer)
Callum Wilson looks set to leave Newcastle. The question is whether he will spend the next six months at the Toon before leaving on a free transfer or whether Howe will try to release him to secure a transfer fee this month.
Before Christmas, Football Insider claimed that Wilson will leave Newcastle at the end of his contract following an injury-riddled season feature in just four leagues game, failing to score or assist.
If the club receives an offer this month, Howe will surely be happy to accept to move him.
Martin Dubravka (linked to Al-Shabab)
It already seems that Martin Dubravka is destined to leave Newcastleand Saudi Arabia’s Al-Shabab is closing in on bringing a goalkeeper to the Middle East.
The transfer has been approved by the Saudi Professional League’s Financial Sustainability Committee, although it still needs to be approved by Newcastle. Howe will be looking to replace the Slovakian, who has been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper of late due to Nick Pope’s injury problems.
The 35-year-old has made 171 appearances for the Magpies since joining in 2017. With his contract expiring this summer, getting a fee for him in January makes a lot of sense.
Howe will be looking to replace the veteran goalkeeper, especially if he needs protection for Pope in the future. Whether they will find someone this month or in the summer remains unclear.
