An increasingly divided fan base will undoubtedly start to turn in unison if Tottenham Hotspur fail to finish 2024 on a high.
There is a seemingly endless list of figures and circumstances that can be blamed for Spurs’ current malaise, with a Boxing Day defeat at Nottingham Forest leaving the Lilywhites firmly rooted in mid-table obscurity.
Ange Postecoglou led Spurs to their worst ever first half Premier League season since 2008/09, but many factions of the fans still believe he is the man to turn the club’s fortunes around. Nevertheless, Sunday’s fight seems seismic.
The team is still depleted, and the boss still lacks options in key areas of the pitch. That was the case for most of his term.
Here’s how Tottenham could line up against Wolves in their final game of 2024.
GK: Fraser Forster – Apart from shaky footwork, Forster has generally been good between the sticks for Spurs and is hardly at the forefront of their concerns. He will remain the starter while Guglielmo Vicario heals from a broken ankle.
RB: Pedro Porro – Porro’s form has suffered due to being overworked this season. He plays such a demanding role and the respite offered by Grandpa Spence was to be welcomed. However, Spence is suspended on Sunday so Porro will be back.
CB: Archie Gray – You wouldn’t say Gray was a shining light as such, but the teenager performed incredibly well given the situation he was thrust into.
CB: Yves Bissouma – Radu Dragsuin is doubtful for Sunday after picking up a knock on his ankle on Boxing Day and Ben Davies has been ruled out, leaving Postecoglou with defensive injury crisis. Midfielder Yves Bissouma could be forced into defense as an emergency alternative.
LB: Destiny Udogie – It was a stop-and-go campaign for Udogie, who struggled mightily for consistency. While his workload has contributed to his indifferent form, you feel the Italian now needs a run of games in the side.
CM: Rodrigo Bentancur – After six weeks off, Bentancur could be in line for his second start in four days.
CM: Pope Sarr – Sarr has played well this season and has acted as one of the mainstays. Spurs require his feet in the middle of the park.
CM: James Maddison – Maddison was unable to influence proceedings from the bench on Boxing Day and it seems likely that he will be brought back into the XI given the form he has shown over the past few weeks. It’s been a productive individual campaign so far.
RW: Dejan Kulusevski – Ange will want Kulusevski and Maddison to work in creative tandem without sacrificing midfield control. The Swede has played a central leading role this term, but can also function admirably off the pitch.
ST: Dominic Solanke – Summer arrival is no Harry Kanebut he has enjoyed a good start to his Tottenham career. There is no chance that he will drop out of the XI on Sunday.
LW: Son Heung-min – Son really can no longer cope with the demands of the Premier League schedule, but Ange’s back-up options are so thin that the captain is likely to have to trot from the start again this weekend.
