Ruben Amorim explains the return of Marcus Rashford to the Man Utd team
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim insisted that Marcus Rashford’s return to the matchday squad was proof of his repeated insistence that the door remains open for the forward.
After being left out of the last four squad due to his public acknowledgment of his desire for a “new challenge”, Rashford is back on the bench to face Newcastle United on Monday.
His return coincides with the suspension of captain Bruno Fernandes, while United are also without the banned Manuel Ugarte and the injured Mason Mount, and Amorim admitted his limited options contributed to the decision to recall Rashford.
“The selection and we have a lot of players out there,” Amorim explained when asked why Rashford was back. “As I said every week I pick the players for the opponent and he was available to pick. This time he is there.”
Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were also brought back to United starting line-up, and Amorim admitted he hopes to counter Newcastle’s potent threat.
“In the beginning I made changes because of training and now it’s about winning games, I’m always just trying to win games,” he explained. “The team is at the same level, so I try to use the characteristics of the opponent.”
