Player ratings as Magpies condemn Red Devils to fourth successive defeat
Newcastle heaped misery on Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as they condemned the Red Devils to a fourth consecutive defeat on Monday night.
The signs were ominous from the outset as Newcastle immediately imposed themselves on the contest and needed no more than three minutes to open the scoring. Alexander Isak scored for the sixth successive Premier League game after Lewis Hall’s cross was untroubled.
The visitors’ midfield developed into arguably the best in the league, and United’s aging pivot had no answers. Newcastle were extremely dominant and Isak missed a great chance to double their lead before Joelinton did so in the 19th minute.
Joshua Zirkzee’s withdrawal after the 30-minute mark was a damning indictment of United’s woeful display (and Amorim’s strange team selection), but the hosts had a few glimmers towards the end of the first half. Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro spurned good chances to get the Red Devils back into the game from nothing.
Greater cheerfulness reigned in the second period as United finally got a foothold in the fight and had more eyes on Martin Dubravka’s goal. Harry Maguire hit the post and Matthijs de Ligt had a goal blocked in the same sequence before substitute Leny Yoro headed in Christian Eriksen’s corner.
Despite their rise, Newcastle managed to keep the Red Devils at arm’s length and they managed to hold on relatively comfortably for a rare league victory at Old Trafford – only their third since 1972.
Chelsea’s loss to Ipswich means Eddie Howe’s side are just three points behind the fourth-placed Blues.
