Pep Guardiola makes an alarming admission about Man City’s finances after a miserable run of form

Pep Guardiola has admitted that Manchester City could be in significant financial trouble next season if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

City’s woeful run of form has seen them drop to seventh in the Premier League, with Guardiola no longer focusing on winning the title, instead putting all his efforts into trying to steady the ship.

With a streak of one win in the last eight games City further and further away from a Champions League spot, Guardiola admitted his side could be in deep trouble if they fail to qualify for Europe’s premier competition.

“Finance is a problem, of course it is, but it’s not only that,” Guardiola said. “We’re in danger now. Of course we are.

“When I said before [that this could happen]people laughed. It’s cheeky: to win the Premier League.

“They said: ‘Ah, qualifying for the Champions League is not a great success’. I know that [can happen]because that’s what happens to clubs in this country. For many years they were dominant and after many years they did not qualify for the Champions League.

“The only team that has been in the Champions League for the last 11 or 12 years [sic] was Man City… if we don’t qualify it’s because we don’t deserve it. Because we weren’t prepared, because we had a lot of problems, and we didn’t solve those problems and find a way to win games. There are a lot of competitors that will be there. It is very important for every club and if we don’t win, we will be relegated.”

City will get the chance to close the gap on the competition on Thursday when they host Everton in an early Boxing Day game.
