Meta will invest in AI-generated personas and profiles to drive engagement
Profiles generated by artificial intelligence and users could soon flood Facebook, according to new comments from the CEO of Meta AI.
Over the past year, the social media platform company has been refining and promoting new programs and artificial intelligence technology on sites like Facebook. In July, Meta launched new trial AI character creation tools with hundreds of thousands of characters already created.
Although most of these characters are private for now, Meta expects them to become a regular part of the platform in the next few years.
“We expect that these AIs will actually, over time, exist on our platforms, in the same way that accounts exist,” said Connor Hayes, vice president of products for generative AI. Financial Times Thursday.

“They will have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share AI-powered content on the platform… that’s where we see all of this going,” he added.
Hayes said investing in artificial intelligence will be a “priority” for Meta over the next two years to make its platforms “more fun and engaging” for users. Currently, users can access Meta AI for photo editing or create AI assistants.
The Financial Times also reported that Meta also plans to roll out new text-to-video generation software for content creators to insert into AI-generated videos.
Ahead of these launches, some experts have warned that significant safeguards need to be put in place to prevent the technology from being “weaponised”.
“Without strong safeguards, platforms risk amplifying false narratives through these AI-driven accounts,” Becky Owen, head of marketing at talent agency Billion Dollar Boy and former head of Meta’s creative innovation team, told the Financial Times.
She also warned that the influx of AI users could actually dilute the brand by flooding the platform with relatively low-quality content.
She added, “Unlike human creators, these AI people don’t have lived experiences, emotions, or the same ability to connect.”
Content generated by artificial intelligence is currently required turn on the “AI Info” tag on Facebook.
In the comment on Fox BusinessMeta’s spokesperson praised the capabilities of the AI tool.
“With AI Studio, people can create and talk to AI characters that are AI based on your interests. Anyone can create and use them for help, entertainment or support. You can build and discover AI to help you with things like teach you how to cook, getting quick tips, generating headlines, sharing fashion tips or giving daily affirmations,” the spokesperson said.
Although Meta is investing significantly in AI, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in April that it could be several years before they see any results from their AI technology.
“Historically, investing in building these new scaled experiences in our apps has been a very good long-term investment for us and for the investors who have stayed with us, and the early signs are quite positive here as well. But building leading AI will also be a bigger undertaking than other experiences we’ve added to our apps and that will likely take a few years,” Zuckerberg said.
