Amazing scenes! Tom O’Connell timed out, recalled then dismissed for golden duck in BPL 2024-25

Australian all-rounder Tom O’Connell was involved in a rare incident during a recent Bangladesh Premier League 2024-25 match. Tom O’Connell was dismissed twice in the same game as he was initially dismissed for a time-out before being dismissed on the next ball.

Khulna Tigers set a target of 204 runs in 20 overs at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday, December 31. William Bosisto scored an unbeaten 75 off 50 balls, including eight fours and three sixes. In reply, Chittagong Kings struggled during the powerplay, losing five wickets in just 6.1 overs.

Tom O’Connell was sent off for a time-out after being late to the venue. After the dismissal of Haider Ali, he went to the post of no. 7. Khulna Tigers captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz raised the issue before the umpires. O’Connell was awarded a time out by referees Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanvir Ahmed.

However, Mehidy reconsidered the decision and motioned for O’Connell to return, showing great sportsmanship. The umpires then allowed him to hit the bat in the game. The drama did not end there as O’Connell was dismissed on his first ball by Mohammad Nawaz. This sequence of events left commentators in disbelief.

“No one expected such a flurry of wickets to fall,” said the commentator.

FanCode took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share a video with the caption, “Timeout drama in the #BPL! 😵 Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz sportingly called Tom O’Connell back after being sent off by the refs! 🤝”

The umpires ruled O’Connell out under Article 40.1 of the BPL Regulations. According to 40.1 of the Laws of Cricket, “after the fall of the wicket or the retirement of the batsman, the incoming batsman must, unless a time is specified, be ready to receive the ball, or for another batsman to be ready to receive the ball receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this condition is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Time out.”

Personally feel that Miraz has done a fantastic job – Mohammad Mithun

Chittagong Kings captain Mohammad Mithun praised Mehidy Hasan Miraz for his sportsmanship in recalling Tom O’Connell, who was time-out. Mithun admitted that it was in accordance with the rules for the fielding side to appeal, but Miraz’s gesture showed great heart.

“Personally, I think that Miraz did a fantastic job. He showed that he has a big heart. It is within the rules for the side in the field to complain. Kudos to Miraz for allowing [O’Connell] come back to the crease,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Mithun as saying.

“A batsman shouldn’t be late all the way, especially in T20s. He was a bit late in his preparation. He was probably a bit relaxed while preparing, maybe he didn’t realize we were going to lose wickets so quickly. That’s what made him late. Nothing else.”
