Tim Bradley’s advice to Devin Haney: Go back to Mexico?
Team Bradley wants former two-division world champion Devin Haney to return to Mexico, where he began his pro career in 2015. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) fought 10 low-level opponents in Tijuana, Mexico before came to the USA
Haney lost a 12-round majority decision to Ryan Garcia on April 20, and looked weak in the chin area. His power was also weak. Unfortunately, those things won’t change when Devin, 26, returns to Mexico to take on minor league and third division teams.
Humble pie in Tijuana?
Bradley doesn’t notice that Haney now wants the big money for his fights, as he and his dad, Bill, feel like they’ve arrived. They want more money from fighting in the USA against top opposition. They won’t want to take a dramatic pay cut fighting in Mexico. I don’t see that as realistic.
Once fighters start making millions from their fights, they don’t want to go back to making a pittance like they did early in their careers. In addition, they also hit hard in Mexico, and those fighters will aim Haney’s glass beard from the jump, looking to take advantage of what Ryan Garcia exposed.
“Devin Haney, do you want to come back? Get back to your roots bro,” Tim Bradley said further Xgiving some pearls of wisdom to the recently beaten Devin Haney. “Go back to where you started. Where did you start? You started in Mexico. Go back and get one of those guys out of there, man.
“Go back there and start there. Have some of that humble pie. Go back to where you started. If you go back to the beginning, I tell you. You come to get back on top,” Bradley said.
Haney’s chin is not strong enough to take the big punches of the fighters in this sport. Going back to Mexico won’t magically solve that problem. One can only imagine what a Mexican striker like Oscar Duarte would do to Devin if given the chance to fight him.
If it was that easy for fighters to fix their careers by fighting in Mexico, everyone would be doing it. It doesn’t work that way. The only thing Haney will accomplish by returning to Tijuana, Mexico is filling out his resume the way he did before.
