Arsenal close to concluding the ongoing search for a coach


Arsenal are reportedly very close to appointing a new head coach following the resignation of Jonas Eidevall last October.

The Gunners remain without a permanent solution to their head coach dilemma at the start of 2025 as they prepare to face Bristol City on Sunday in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, before the Women’s Super League (WSL) returns on January 18.

Interim head coach Renee Slegers remains one of the names at the top of the list, after the former assistant coach went eleven games unbeaten at the helm. Arsenal ended a turbulent 2024 with a historic 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich at Meadow Park, catapulting them to the top of their group in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Since then, fans have been calling for the club to reward Slegers with a permanent role. Although no solution was reached during the winter break, recent reports from The Guardian suggest that the end of the ongoing saga is near.

Speaking on The Guardian Women’s Football Weekly Podcast, Garry suggested that “the process of finding a long-term head coach is nearing completion”. Confirmation of the appointment may not come before Sunday’s cup tie, but an announcement is expected before Arsenal face Crystal Palace in the WSL next weekend.

After her near-perfect form as interim boss, Slegers has been confirmed as one of the candidates being interviewed for the permanent role. Despite there being a strong case for her signing, Arsenal have reportedly spoken to managers around the world to ensure they find the best candidate.

The Dutch manager remained tight-lipped over the past three months when asked whether or not she wanted the job permanently. Despite keeping her cards close to her chest, Slegers claimed she is “happy to be with Arsenal at the moment”.

Speaking to 90min in December, Slegers said: “I don’t know about the future, I’m just doing the best I can in my role at the moment.”
