The Washington Post announced it will lay off nearly 100 workers, or 4% of its staff, in an attempt to stem mounting losses, according to media reports.
The cuts will reportedly affect mainly employees on the business side of the famous American newspaper owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
The publication is among many news outlets struggling in the digital age as a growing number of online platforms compete for advertising revenue.
The layoffs, announced Tuesday, come at a time of turmoil at the company after Mr. Bezos broke tradition and blocked the endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris on the eve of the US presidential elections in November.
In 2023, the Washington Post reported losses of $77m (£45m) and a drop in readership on its website. In the same year, the newspaper announced that it was offering workers a voluntary buyout in an attempt to reduce the number of employees by 10%.
Mr. Bezos wrote the opinion piece explaining that the blocking of support was necessary due to the growing public perception that “the media is biased”.
However, the newspaper announced that 250,000 of its readers had canceled their subscriptions in protest.
Since then, several prominent journalists, including investigative reporter Josh Dawsey, who confirmed to X that he has taken a job at The Wall Street Journal, have also left the paper. Editor-in-Chief Matea Gold is joining Post rival The New York Times, the Times has confirmed.
The apparent conflict between Bezos and the newspaper’s top talent worsened on Saturday when the Pulitzer Prizes were awarded the cartoonist, Ann Telnaes, said she was resigning from the Washington Post.
It came after the newspaper refused to publish a satirical cartoon showing Mr Bezos and other tycoons kneeling before a statue of President-elect Donald Trump.
Last month Mr. Bezos announced that Amazon will donate $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund and make a $1 million in-kind contribution. Mr. Bezos also described Trump’s re-election victory as a “remarkable political comeback” and dined with him at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
