Ian Kersting, Assistant State Attorney A Parish of New Orleanswas found dead of an apparent suicide in his office, police said.
The 34-year-old was found with “apparent gunshot wounds” in his office, the New Orleans Police Department confirmed. WVUE-DT. His body was found by the police on Saturday around 9 pm in the District Attorney’s Office.
New Orleans EMS arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed to the outlet.

Kersting (34) was admitted to the Louisiana Bar Association in October 2020.
He was in charge of the District Attorney’s Office as an expert on sexual harassment cases and was assigned to the office Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). The initiative worked in tandem with the New Orleans Police Department investigating and prosecuting sex crimes using recovered DNA evidence.

Following his death, the New Orleans District Attorney’s office released a statement mourning the loss of a “beloved member.” office.
“The family of the Orleans Parish Prosecutor’s Office suffered a terrible tragedy Saturday night,” the statement read. “Assistant District Attorney Ian Kersting was a beloved member of our office, and we send our love and deepest condolences to his family.”
“It is important that we currently support each other and ask the media to respect the privacy of the affected persons,” the statement said.

Kersting’s death comes just days after a terror attack rocked the city in the early hours of New Year’s Day, leaving 14 dead and dozens injured.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an Army veteran from Houston, plowed his way through the crowd in a rented Ford pickup truck. Bourbon Street entertainers in an attack that officials say was inspired by the Islamic State.

The FBI recovered a black ISIS flag from the rental truck and discovered that Jabbar had pledged allegiance to ISIS in videos released hours before the attack.
