Thomas Tuchel insists that Jack Grealish is still a lot of his plans in England, who goes forward, but warned him that his behavior from the field can be observed and says he has a responsibility to look more “peaceful”.
Manchester City man was left out of the first Tuchel team of 26 people, after making only three replacement appearances in the Premier League this calendar year.
Still, Tuchel revealed that the two had sincere discussions about his current bad form, and the head of the new England is glittering in his admiration for the wing player.
“I love Jack,” Tuchel said.
“I love everything about him – his personality, I love his quality, the guy has the courage, he can bear the heat, not hit if Bernabeu whistles him.
“So, is he a player who can be available and affect our team? Yes – 100 percent. But lately he just doesn’t have a rhythm, and he knows it. I think Jack’s getting better and better, the more minutes play. He has a character to be glue on the team, it’s easy for young people to attach to him.”
The English manager was directly asked about journalistic reports showing Greelish socializing at the pub in East Manchester a week ago. Pep Guardiola said he was relaxed because of the pictures, and he just judged his players about how they perform in training and on the field. Tuchel mostly agrees.
“Of course, it’s not ideal if it’s in the newspaper and out there, but it’s not just his fault,” Tuchel said.
“Everyone has a phone there in their pocket. These guys are known, it can happen. It is not ideal, we want it calmly, but that is not the reason that he does not choose him.”
Tuchel also revealed that he plans to travel to Saudi Arabia in the coming weeks to meet Ivan Toney and watch him play in his body, and that the striker is still in his thoughts for future England.
It was also confirmed that Ollie Watkins was only left out of Tuchel’s first team because he has a knee injury. But the manager says there is a real competition for the role of the striking underworld of Harry Kane, and Watkins, Toney and Dominic Solance are all in the frame.
“I think, I think, it will be important to see John in the coming weeks, watch the live game, maybe watch a live training, to get a better sense of him. He’s on the list.”
Tuchel says that in Watkins’ absence, a direct choice between Solanca and Toney for the upcoming World Cup qualifications against Albania and Latvia.
“In the end, it was a purely sporting decision for Dominic. It was nothing to do with Saudi Arabia, or if we didn’t believe the league there. I only had a lot more evidence and live watching from Dominic, so I immediately made that choice.
“With Watkins, we had a decision to make because of the inflammation of the patella tendon that only disturbed him too much, so there is no point in calling him.”
