Oscar Piastra signed an extension of the contract with McLaren, which will keep it with a team up to at least 2028.
Piastra began racing for McLaren in 2023, after signing the previous year and arranged a new years of contract at the top of his current contract, which runs until 2026.
Announcement, which comes before the Australian Prix that opened the season this weekend Live on Sky SportsSo Piastra and Lando Norris will be teammates in McLaren in the next three seasons, as Norris’s contract expires at the end of 2027.
“It is a great feeling to know that I am part of the long -term vision of McLaren. The team believed in me when we signed in 2022, and the trip we went to in the last two seasons to help bring McLaren back to the top of the sport,” Piastra said.
“So many talented and special people working on MTC who helped me to become the winner of the Formula One race very early in my career. Therefore, I am very proud to continue to represent this legendary team for many years to come.
“I am excited to fight for big prizes as the driver of McLaren and after last year’s fantastic achievements, it made me still main to stay at the sharp end.”
Piastra won two races in his F1 career, last year’s Hungarian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix, and is among the title favorites for this season, and McLaren expected to have a strong car.
McLaren is the ruling constructor champions, and the CEO Zak Brown says his team has the best driver in the net.
“It is fantastic to confirm Oscar’s extension with McLaren. Not only is he an incredibly talented driver, but his working ethics and cultural fit in the team did not become a mood to extend his time in Papaji,” Brown said.
“We have the best driver’s line on the net, and in the last two seasons we have seen how much property for the Oscar team is both on and off the trail.
“It was absolutely fundamental in adding our heritage with the 2024 construction championship last season, so we are all excited to see what we can do in the years to come while we continue to fight for the World Cups together.”
Will Piastra and Norris continue to work in accordance?
Norris and Piastra seems to have had a good relationship in two seasons together as teammates, but last year there were tense moments.
On the Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris was said to have repeatedly released Piastra during the last stages of the race after underestimating his teammate in the stops. In the end, Norris released Piastra with three rounds, so the Australian won his F1 maiden race.
Six weeks later in Mozi, Piastra overcame Norris in the introductory circle of the Italian Grand Prix when the couple was in the first and second. In doing so, Norris also lost to Charles Leclerca, and Ferrari driver continued his victory.
After that incident, McLaren stated that Norris would get a priority by the end of the season because of his position in the driver’s championship. However, on the Grand Prix Azerbaijan, Norris slowed down Sergio Perez to help Piastra, and the latter won the race.
“The further expansion of our partnership with the Oscar is a symbol of our belief and trust in it as a driver, as well as a reflection of our common ambition to continue together in our fight for championships,” said team director Andrea Stella.
“It was a pleasure to work with Oscar over the past two seasons and continued to prove how impressive he was in terms of his talent, determination and working ethics as a driver and his contribution to our team and culture as a person.
“In addition to Land, we have what we need to lock in the long run to keep pushing forward. I look forward to keeping watching Oscar grow and develop as a driver and I know that many successes before him.”
