In major development, the India’s Government requested a Committee on Crown Control in India (BCCI) to remove tobacco and alcohol ads from the upcoming IPL season.
The decision was made, keeping in mind the increase in non -proportioned diseases in India. As a result, the government asked the IPL to contribute to the exacerbation of the health of citizens of the country
IPL is easily the most famous sports tournament in India and has the power of billions of people. Promotions create a huge impact on the minds of their viewers, and tobacco and alcohol products are obviously harmful to health.

The Government of India asks BCCI to ban the commercials of tobacco and alcohol
The Ministry of Health and the Welcome of the Family wrote to the President of the IPL Arun Singh Dhumal. In the letter, the Ministry asked IPL BCCI to remove tobacco advertising and alcohol, the surrogate of the ad, etc.
General Director of Health Services, Mr. Atul Goel, wrote this letter and also requested a ban on tobacco and alcoholic products in all associated sports facilities and events in the future.
The reason for this prohibition is also stated in the letter. Atul Goel claimed that India is currently facing a major burden of non-propelled illnesses and thus asked IPL to conduct all the regulations.
In the letter, Goel also asked the crickets and sports persons not to promote tobacco and alcoholic products because they were a role model for future generations of the country.

India has a significant burden of non-comprehensive diseases- cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, diabetes, hypertension, etc., which make up more than 70% of death annually.
Tobacco and alcohol use are key risk factors for NCD. Therefore, IPL should strictly carry out regulations regarding:
- Forbidding all forms of tobacco/alcohol advertising, including the surrogate ads, within the stadium premises where games and related IPL games/events are held, as well as during the broadcast sessions on national television.
- Tobacco/alcoholic products in all associated events and sports facilities.
- It discourages the promotion of sports athletes (including commentators) who directly or indirectly support products directly or indirectly associated with alcohol or tobacco.
Cricket players are role models for young people to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. IPL, as the largest sports platform in the country, has a social and moral obligation to promote public health and support of the Government’s health initiatives.
When will IPL 2025 happen?
The Indian Premier League 2025 season will begin on March 22 with the Kolkat Champion defenders Knight Riders, with which Royal Challengers Bengalur is facing the first season of the season in Eden Gardens, Kolkat. The finals of the tournament will be played on May 25 in Calcutta.
