On Tuesday night, President Trump had a special message for “amazing Greenland people”, whose island has repeatedly expressed interest in buying – by buying or force.
“We strongly support your right to determine your own future,” he said, briefly pausing during speaking to Congress to directly address Greenlanders. Then, with a confident nod, he added, “We will make you rich.”
Some congress members responded with a mixture of applause, murmuring – and a few smiles. Greenlands were not so delighted.
“It is up to us if we are getting rich,” said Pele Broberg, the leader of one of the main political parties Greenland.
Mr. Trump spoke of the acquisition of Greenland, a large island in the Arctic Ocean, since his first term, but this was the first time that he had addressed 56,000 inhabitants directly and prominently.
“It’s a very small population, but a very, very large piece of land and very, very important for military security,” he told MPs.
And, he added, “I think we will get it – one way or another, we will get it.”
Mr. Trump’s comments – and his open desire to get Greenland – they come just when the island of Wag disabled decision on his own sovereignty. Denmark colonized Grenland 300 years ago, and although in the last half centuries it has transferred some authority to the island, it continues to control the key aspects of the island management.
Next week, Greenland will vote in a parliamentary election that could be one of the most expressive in their history. Several leading Greenland politicians openly called for independence, but the pace – and even security – it will depend on the outcome of the choice. Some parties are advocated for fast action, while others support a more gradual approach or do not interrupt ties with Denmark at all.
“It’s just wild,” said Nino Bronlund, a student teacher, about Mr. Trump’s claim that America “get” Greenland.
“It’s just money and security,” he said, speaking as he walked the school in the capital, Nuuk. “I don’t like it.”
Anne-Katrine Nielsen, Higher Assistant Police Greenland, said she was also shocked by Mr. Trump’s speech.
“He doesn’t care about people,” she said. “He is only after our Uranus, our mines and our strategic position in the world. We are right in the middle of everything, so I believe that is what he wants.”
Grenland has huge unused resources, Including rare land minerals that are vital for high -tech industry and attracted feverish geopolitical competition. Vice President JD Vance spoke of the “incredible natural resources” of Greenland, and Republican senators recently held a hearing about “Greenland’s geostrategic importance.” But extreme time, the eco -friendly ecologists and other factors imprinted hopes in Bonanz.
During his first term, Mr. Trump floated with the idea of buying the United States to buy Greenland from Denmark, which was basically talking. This time, Mr. Trump took a sharper tone, saying he would not exclude the force to take over the island.
