Guardiola is looking for more from Grealish as the forgotten England international looks to revive his career

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged Jack Grealish to work harder and regain his place in the starting XI.

The 29-year-old played a key role in Manchester City’s 2022-23 treble campaign, making 50 appearances in all competitions.

Grealish contributed five goals and 11 assists, helping the team secure the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League titles.

Despite his previous success, the England international has struggled to make an impact this season.

In Saturday’s 4-1 Premier League win over West Ham, Grealish was left on the bench and Brazilian winger Savinho took his place in the starting line-up.

The City boss has made it clear that he expects Grealish to prove his worth and fight for his place in the team.

“Savinho is in better shape and everything than Jack, and that’s why I played Savinho,” explained Guardiola.

“Do I want a triple-Award winning Jack? Yes, I want it, but I’m trying to be honest with myself about it. They have to fight. You can say it’s unfair.

“If you think so, then it’s fine, but you have to prove it [to me]’Okay, I will fight with Savinho, to deserve to play in that position’, every day, every week and every month.”

Grealish’s season was also marred by injuries, which limited his options. He has only started six league games so far.

Despite his recent struggles, Guardiola expressed his confidence in the player’s abilities.

“Two weeks ago he was injured and he needs rhythm and play, but the players need training,” added Guardiola.

“I have no doubts about the quality of Jack or any of these players. They wouldn’t be here [otherwise].

“I know he can do it because I’ve seen him. I saw his level and I want that in every training session and every game.”

Manchester City will return to action in the FA Cup on January 11, hosting fourth-tier Salford City.
