Former Ecuadorian Glas vice president evacuated from prison after attempted murder, Reuters lawyer says
GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador (Reuters) – Ecuador’s former vice president Jorge Glas has been evacuated from prison after an assassination attempt, his lawyer said on Sunday, blaming the government for the situation.
Sonia Gabriela Vera called on the United Nations and other international organizations to intervene after what she called the “assassination attempt” on Glas in La Roca prison.
The attack was “the result of a state that condemned him to danger, torture and a slow death,” Vera said on X, commenting on a post claiming that Glas had been taken from prison because of a threat to his life from rebel inmates.
“His immediate evacuation confirms what we have repeatedly condemned: they are deliberately playing with his life,” added Vera. “If anything happens to him, it will be a state crime.”
Ecuador’s SNAI prison agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Glas was arrested in April after Ecuadorian security forces raided the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he was imprisoned after seeking asylum.
While Voices supporters claim that the arrest is politically motivated, the former vice president has been convicted of corruption twice.
Glas also faces accusations of misusing funds raised to help rebuild the coastal province of Manabi after a devastating 2016 earthquake.
