Wolverhampton Wanderers earned a 2-0 victory over ten-man Manchester United to climb out of the relegation zone on Boxing Day as they handed their exhausted visitors a third straight defeat.
A thick fog crept over Molineux during the first half, sinking closer to the pitch as each of the first 45 minutes wore on. Fans whose view was obscured by the fog didn’t miss much.
Two clubs fight over the bottom half Premier League table nullified each other in a lukewarm first half. A sleepy Boxing Day encounter sprang to life late on when Bruno Fernandes received a second yellow card less than 90 seconds after the restart.
Wolves almost immediately had the ball in Andre Onana’s net, capitalizing on his numerical superiority only for Jorgen Strand Larsen to be flagged offside. Matheus Cunha didn’t want to curtail his celebrations in the 58th minute, properly swinging a corner kick straight off the flag into the top corner to break the deadlock.
The relegation-fighting hosts had a monopoly on the ball but struggled to extend their lead. Molineux became a rattling bag of nerves as United piled on a lot of pressure before Hwang Hee-chan sealed all three points with a second goal in the 99th minute.
